Becoming a mum changes the way you see things. As a working mum, responsible for running the world’s largest business to business global travel and tourism event, World Travel Market, I decided to develop an idea that I hoped the travel industry would get behind.
I learnt that a child died every 17 seconds from dirty water, and as a young Mum I found that statistic shocking and horrifying. I also learnt that, at that time, just £1.00 could help deliver clean water to a child. So, in 1998, I created the international community development organisation Just a Drop www.justadrop.org with the aim to provide safe water, sanitation and hygiene education to communities across the world and help transform lives.
To date, Just a Drop has operated in 32 countries and transformed the lives of over 1.8 million people. With a stable source of water in the community, health, safety and food security are immediately increased. Furthermore, families are able to grow crops and sell the excess, women have time to engage in income generated activities, they are then able to pay the fees for their children to attend school and get an education. Such is its societal and environmental impact that Just a Drop supports 12 out of 17 of the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
